Student Regulations

It is understood that when a student registers with the Seminary, he/she agrees to obey its regulations, and to be loyal to its purpose. Each student must maintain a consistent Christian life during the entire course, and show due qualification for graduation. The student is required to be faithful to a local church while in course.

Christian Walk

Conduct unbecoming a Christian which adversely affects the biblical standards or Christian witness of the Seminary may result in discipline, including suspension or dismissal from the Seminary. The maintenance of the spiritual and moral standards of the Seminary shall be considered a necessary requisite for release of transcripts, conferring of academic credit, and graduation.

Relationship to a Local Church

A valuable part of the Seminary training is that provided by the student's close association with Jarvis Street Baptist Church or with another local church. The experience gained in Sunday School teaching, visitation, preaching, conducting home Bible studies etc., is long remembered by the graduates as they assume their own pastorates and other spheres of service. Students coming from local churches are expected to remain faithful to their home congregations.

Christian Lifestyle Statement

All students are required to read and sign that they have agreed to comply with the Christian Lifestyle Statement, which states that they accept and will follow certain Scriptural lifestyle expectations while attending the Seminary. This lifestyle statement is reproduced below:

While acknowledging that Policy Statements on other issues not herein addressed may need to be adopted at a later date, we the Trustees and Members of The Toronto Baptist Seminary and Bible College corporation ("the Seminary") hereby affirm the following statement on Christian lifestyle in recognition of the need of the Seminary to maintain and uphold biblical standards.

  1. We affirm that the Bible clearly reveals God's will for the lifestyle of His redeemed people.
  2. We deny that biblical standards in such areas as the family and sexuality are outdated in modern times.
    Deuteronomy 4:2, Psalm 119:89, Matthew 5:17-19, Mark 13:31, Romans 15:4, 1 Corinthians 10:6-11
  3. We affirm that human sexuality is a good gift from God to be received with thanksgiving.
  4. We deny that sexual activity outside of marriage is necessary for the full development of human personhood.
Genesis 1:27-28, Genesis 2:18-25, Proverbs 5:18-19, Song of Songs, Hebrews 13:4
  5. We affirm that in the Bible God defines marriage as a life-long, exclusive covenant between a man and a woman.
  6. We deny that same-sex relationships constitute marriage in the biblical sense.
    Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:3-9, Romans 7:2-3
  7. We affirm that our desire is to please God in everything we do and that only within marriage as defined in #3 above is sexual activity acceptable as being pleasing to God.
  8. We do not believe that pornography, pre-marital sex, adultery, incest, bestiality, homosexuality, or lesbianism are acceptable as being pleasing to God.
    Exodus 20:14, 17, Leviticus 18, Matthew 5:27-30, Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 5:1-2, 9-13, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 13-20, 1 Corinthians 7:3-5, 8-9, Ephesians 5:3-5, 1 Thessalonians 4:1-18
  9. We affirm that the above guidelines are clearly based on Scripture and therefore constitute the will of God for the Trustees, Members, Faculty, Staff, Employees, Volunteers, and Students of the Seminary, and we further affirm that the above guidelines shall serve as the basis for discipline and/or dismissal as determined in the sole discretion of the Trustees.
  10. We deny that the use of the above guidelines is motivated by anything other than a reverent fear of Almighty God our Maker, Redeemer and Judge, and our sincere desire to obey His commandments revealed in Scripture in accordance with our faith.

Health Insurance

All students are required to have health insurance. Ontario residents are usually covered by OHIP, a government sponsored plan. Students from other provinces carry their provincial plan with them. At registration students must furnish proof of their insurance enrolment.

Foreign students are required to register through the Seminary office in the master group insurance plan the Seminary has with John Ingle Insurance Company. This plan provides comprehensive health insurance to cover medical problems which may arise after the student enters Canada. In the event that a student already has a comparable comprehensive health insurance plan, this will be accepted by the school. Payment in full is required at registration in September or January as part of student fees. Note: students must personally cover the costs of any deductibles which may be charged by the insurance company on certain medical fees. Upon arrival in Canada students must report immediately to the Seminary office to work out the details of their medical coverage.

Appearance

The student's personal appearance should be becoming to a Christian. A business casual dress style has been adopted. Male students are expected to wear dress pants rather than jeans. Hair length should be above the collar. Female students are expected to dress modestly and to refrain from wearing jeans to class. Tidiness, cleanliness and modesty are considered to be an important part of Christian testimony.
